Today I have conducted further research into magazine layouts, codes and conventions to enable me to gain a further understanding of how to create and what to include in my own magazine. I achieved this by creating a logbook in which I analyzed two magazine covers, contents pages and double page spreads. I also included the 3 theories within this presentation and what inspired me from these magazines for my own magazine.

Existing Magazines Audience Research 23/09/10

Magazine Cover 1:

Question 1: What breakfast cereal do they eat?

Answer: Porridge.

Reason: I think that the girl on the front cover of this magazine would eat porridge because she would need a sustainable food that would stop her getting hungry throughout the day as she would be concentrating a lot as she is doing science. Also as she is a teenage girl she probably would want to watch what she is eating for weight reasons.

Question 2: What car/mode of transport do they use?

Answer: Car or Train/Bus.

Reason: She is at college so if she is old enough to drive she would be a new driver, so would have a typical first car, small with a small engine to save insurance and petrol money as she is a student. However, she may not be able to drive and therefore would probably use a form of public transport such as a bus or train especially as these offer student discounts and are cheap.

Question 3: What type of accommodation do they live in?

Answer: Family home.

Reason: As she is a full time student, if she has a job it will only be a part time job so she will not be able to afford to live on her own or with friends. Therefore, she will live in a home with her parents or careers still.

Question 4: What do they drink?

Answer: Fresh fruit juice.

Reason: As she is studying science at college she would need to drink something that would give her the right nutrients. Also as she is a teenage girl she will want to drink something healthy to manage her weight.

Question 5: What TV shows/ films do they watch?

Answer: Sci-Fi shows and movies.

Reason: As she is studying science at college she would probably enjoy films and shows that are science related.

Question 6: What type of music do they like?

Answer: Chart music and classical.

Reason: As she is a teenager its probable that she listens to chart music as most teenagers do. However, as she is a science student she would need to concentrate a lot when she’s doing coursework and may listen to classical to help her relax.

Question 7: What is their favourite meal?

Answer: Healthy meals, fruit and vegetables.

Reason: As a science student she would know what nutrients she would need to have balanced meals and so therefore would have very healthy food including a lot of fruit and vegetables.

Question 8: What sport do they watch/ play?

Answer: Tennis.

Reason: Because it is not a contact sport and is less violent which most girls would prefer. Also, it is a sport that she would be able to play herself.

Question 9: What is their marital status?

Answer: Single.

Reason: She looks like she concentrates on her studies and job if she has one, than on relationships.

Question 10: Where do they go on hoilday?

Answer: Family holidays abroad, or weekends in the UK with family or friends.

Reason: As she is a college student and if she has a job it will only be part time, she will be probably be unable to afford to go abroad with friends. Therefore, if she does go on holiday abroad it will probably be with her family. Although, she may be able to afford to go away for the weekend with friends in the UK, if not her and her family might have holidays in the UK.

Question 11: Do they vote? If so, who for?

Answer: No.

Reason: She probably will be under 18 if she is at college, therefore will be unable to vote.

Question 12: What is their idea of a ‘good night out’?

Answer: Study groups/social events

Reason: As she looks like a dedicated science student, her and her fellow students may revise and do work as a group to make it easier/more enjoyable. However, as she is a teenager she will probably also attend social events, such as parties, clubs, concerts.

Question 1: What breakfast  cereal do they eat?

Answer: Lucky Charms/    Special K

Reason: I believe that she would eat Lucky Charms cereal as it a more fun breakfast and she looks like a bubbly person. However, as she is a teenage girl and looks like she’s into sport, she may need a less fattening breakfast and therefore may eat something like Special K.

Question 2 : What car/mode of transport do they use?

Answer: Car or Bus/Train.

Reason: As I said previously, if she is old enough and able to drive she would probably only drive a typical first car, a small car with a small engine as that will be all she will be able to afford being a student. However, if not she will probably take the bus or train to college and back as it is cheap and they offer student rates.

Question 3: What type of accommodation do they live in?

Reason: As she is a college student she will probably be either single or in a relationship as she is not old enough to be married yet.

Question 10: Where do they go on hoilday?

Answer: Family holidays/weekends away with friends.

Reason: As she is a college student and if she has a job it will only be part time, she will be probably be unable to afford to go abroad with friends. Therefore, if she does go on holiday abroad it will probably be with her family. Although, she may be able to afford to go away for the weekend with friends in America, if not her and her family might have holidays in America.

Question 11: Do they vote? If so, who for?

Answer: No.

Reason: She probably will be under 18 if she is at college, therefore will be unable to vote.

16/12/10 – Final Draft of Front Cover.

Todays target was to demonstrate an understanding of my analytical and evaluation skills, I achieved this by using my evaluation from my first and second draft to depict what content I wanted on my final draft of my front cover for my college magazine. I also showed how I done this by creating a development diary to show my step by step actions in creating my front cover.

Development Diary for Final Draft.

1st and 2nd Draft Evaluation.

After completing my first and second draft’s of the front cover for my magazine I decided that I liked aspects on both drafts more than others. Firstly, on my first draft I preferred the overall layout of the magazine as I felt it looked more professional and more visually appealing. I also preferred that there was a mixture of two different font types in the coverlines, as I thought this looked more interesting than just using one font type. Another advantage of my first draft, is that I preferred the colour scheme used as I thought it matches the rest of the layout well. However, I preferred the main image used on the second draft and used with my colour scheme from the first draft I believe it would look a lot better. I also preferred how the barcode and price were laid out on the second draft.

I then collected two peer evaluations to help further my understanding of what magazine layout people thought was better;

Peer evaluation 1: Overall I preferred the first draft more than the second, firstly the font used on the first draft I thought looked a lot more professional and the layout of the coverlines was better. Also I preferred the insert of a heart used on the first draft as I think it matched the masthead better than the insert used on the second draft. Lastly, I preferred the colour scheme of the pinks and reds over the browns and purples used on the second draft. However, I thought the image on the second draft would match the colour scheme better than the main image used on the first draft. I also preferred that the insert of a heart on the masthead was in a different colour on the second draft, this made it stand out more and look nicer. Lastly, I preferred the layout of the barcode and price on the second draft as it was easier to see.

Peer evaluation 2:

Today my task was to demonstrate an understanding of magazine layout conventions and demonstrate an ability to measure own progress during daily production work. I achieved this target by creating my first and second draft of my magazine front cover and showing how I created it by keeping a development diary throughout the process.

Second Draft Development Diary

SMART Targets – 18/11/10

Today my target is to demonstrate an understanding of magazine layout conventions and to keep an ongoing glossary of key terms and subject specific terminology applying these key terms during subject work. I am going to achieve this by creating a first draft of my magazine layout, using my research and practice to enable me in doing this. I am also going to keep a development diary whilst doing my work, to aid me in showing my steps in creating my first draft.

Development Diary of First Draft

SMART Targets – 11/11/10

Today I am going to demonstrate an understanding of specialist software and magazine layout conventions. I am going to achieve this by researching an existing magazine front cover layout and then creating my own one based on the layout of the example. I will also create a development diary to show my stages in creating this magazine front cover, so that it is clear what I achieved.

Today I…

Today we started off with thinking of ideas to further our knowledge on the magazines. This counts as secondary research. We deconstructed magazines and analysed them to further our understanding on the layout of magazines.
